Sunderland had more than enough chances to win the game but Ben Foster was in inspired form for the Baggies to deny the Black Cats a precious victory.

Who scooped the man of the match award? Richard Mennear gives his player ratings below:

Sunderland (4-1-4-1):

Vito Mannone: Had very little to do for large periods of the match. Baggies offered little and were time-wasting all second half. Distribution still needs to improve....6

DeAndre Yedlin: Showed no signs of any jetlag after a busy international break with the USA team. Looked bright going forward - and his throw-ins have improved! ....6

Younes Kaboul: Chosen to partner Kone ahead of O'Shea and produced a commanding display at the back. Nullified any Baggies threat. Booked.....7

Lamine Kone: Took control at the back, always there to sweep up and snuff out any threat posed by the Baggies forward line.....7

Patrick van Aanholt: Great covering work in first half, twice West Brom were almost in until the Dutchman intervened. Provided plenty of attacking threat too.MOM....7

Lee Cattermole (C): Was busy on return to the Sunderland side. Often the furthest midfielder forward, closed down by Foster when in on goal. Poor decisions at times....7

Jan Kirchhoff: Some crunching tackles in the holding role first half. Not his best performance but steady and much better second half. Had shot saved by Foster....6

Yann M'Vila: Was much more involved second half but didn't dominate the play like he did in the first half of the season. Gave the ball away too easily on occasion....6

Fabio Borini: Kept drifting inside to provide support to Defoe. 25-yard strike almost caught Foster out second half. Had two other great chances, one well saved by Foster.....7

Wahbi Khazri: Gave away too many cheap free-kicks early on. Brings a touch of class and guile and cross to Defoe should have resulted in a goal. A threat. Surprisingly subbed...7

Jermain Defoe: Saw a clever flick saved by Foster and dragged another shot wide early on. Was Sunderland's only threat first half. Held the line well against four central defenders. Great chance saved late on....7

Subs:

Dame N'Doye (for Khazri, 82): 6. Had a goal rightly ruled offside. Helped out defensively.
