A PENSIONER took a fatal overdose of tablets.

Sunderland man Edward Townsend suffered from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and was being treated for mental health problems.

An inquest heard that the 75-year-old retired accountant, of Ford Terrace, also had prostate cancer.

Mr Townsend, who never married and had no children, took a large amount of his blood pressure medication on July 13.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital and died on July 20.

Senior Coroner Derek Winter said it was beyond reasonable doubt the pensioner had taken his own life.

Verdict: Suicide.
