DISABLED workers at a Sunderland factory could strike over job cuts.
GMB members at Remploy, in Pallion, are expected to take part in a ballot for industrial action over possible redundancies at 54 sheltered workshops across Britain.
The union’s central executive council (CEC), which will be asked to authorise the ballot, will be told that, after the closure of 29 Remploy factories in 2008, 85 per cent of workers made redundant are still unemployed and on benefits, with little prospect of finding work.
The CEC will be advised of an alternative put to the Government, to save £30million while making Remploy viable.
GMB national secretary Phil Davies has slammed how Remploy has dealt with the job cuts.
