The Streets star Mike Skinner set to perform in Sunderland

The man behind hip hop and UK garage project The Streets will get everyone on the dance floor when he plays a DJ set in Sunderland.

Mike Skinner is bringing his brings turntable skills to the city next month when he performs at new monthly club event, OffBeat, which launches at Independent on Saturday October 7.

Mike Skinner who was part of The Streets for ten years, won an Ivor Novello, a Brit and changed the sound of UK music forever with songs such as ‘Dry Your Eyes’ and ‘Fit But You Know It.’

Cited by NME as one of the greatest lyricists of all time alongside Kurt Cobain and Bob Dylan, Mike released five albums as The Streets and received multiple Mercury Music Prize nominations.

Having shelved the The Streets project after the fifth album, Mike hasn’t slowed down, running clubnights as well as new music projects -The D.O.T and Tonga Balloon Gang.

And most recently a new release via Soundcloud The Darker The Shadow The Brighter The Light in April of this year.

Independent event manager Aram Stuart said: “Mike is the perfect booking to launch the OffBeat night.

“OffBeat is a co-operative event organised by a number of local DJs and promoters.

“Our aim with it is to bring some diversity to the club scene, which already has Haze, House music promoters bringing some of the biggest House DJs in the world to the city, so we know the city can support top class bookings.

“With Mike Skinner we have one world’s biggest producers, he’s a living legend.”
