Stolen van pulled from River Wear

Have your say

POLICE officers have removed a stolen van from the River Wear.

The Echo reported how the vehicle was discovered in the water on Wednesday, just off Webster’s Bank, Deptford, and emergency services launched a search operation to see if there was anyone inside.

But Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue officers found no-one inside the van or in the water surrounding it.

Due to the high tide, the operation to remove the van – reported stolen from an address in Penshaw – from the river was delayed by two days.

Officers were finally able to recover the vehicle yesterday.

A Northumbria Police investigation is now under way into how the van ended up in the water.
