Steven Pienaar signs one-year deal with Sunderland

Former Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar has signed a one-year deal with Sunderland, it has been confirmed today.

The club announced the news via its official Twitter account @SunderlandAFC ahead of David Moyes' press conference this afternoon.

The message read: "SAFC can confirm the signing of Steven Pienaar on a one-year deal."

Former Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar training with Sunderland

The 34-year-old midfielder, who was also linked with a move to the Premier Soccer League, was released by Everton this summer.

He has previously played under David Moyes during his time with the Toffees, and has netted 20 Premier League goals to date.

Formerly captain of the South African team, he retired from international duties in 2012.
