Step up to climb ‘Everest’

Have your say

FORTY people will climb the tower at Durham Cathedral 385 times on Thursday, in an attempt to equal the height of Everest to raise money for charity.

The initiative, backed by Saint John’s College, Durham University, and includes many of its students, will raise funds for the Edith Jackson Trust, which supports the development of education in South Sudan.

Working in partnership with the Episcopal Church of Sudan, the trust builds schools, trains teachers and supports orphans and children from the poorest families, who cannot afford to go to school.

The Edith Jackson Trust, which is based in the Diocese of Durham, is partnered by Durham churches as well as schools and colleges.

Rebecca Wilson, fund-raising co-ordinator for the Trust, said: “Everest is the highest point on earth and if we are going to aim to conquer something, we might as well conquer the highest.

“The school in south Sudan is in great need at the moment.”
