State of our streets
As I life long resident of Houghton-le-Spring, I would like to go on record to express not only a deep sadness but my utter disgust at the failure of Sunderland City Council to do its duty and keep this once proud little town free of litter and vermin.
Its streets and estates once clean and tidy are now knee deep in litter and filth, whilst rats, once a creature of myth and legend used by many a parent to scare unruly children, now brazenly maraud up and down streets scavenging amongst the discarded fast food packaging.
This, I am afraid, is not only a problem of Houghton but throughout the city.
Just what impression this gives to anyone visiting the area I can only imagine.
The council’s solution to the problem is to implement once fortnightly refuse collections, a brilliant idea.
Once again it is a case of people in charge failing dismally to do their jobs, or listen to the people paying their grossly inflated salaries.
It seems there is no such thing as accountability in their vocabulary.
So come on, whoever it is that is responsible get out of your fancy offices take a walk around these filth ridden areas, admit there’s a problem and do something.
