Snow storms to return to North East as Met Office issues warning

The "big freeze" proved to be something of a damp squib for most and we're still battening down the hatches for Storm Jonas, but a wave of unsettled weather moving across the country has led the Met Office to issue yellow warnings and predict snow for parts of the UK.

The gales and heavy rain hitting southern parts of England will subside, but it will again be the turn of the northern parts of England today, with rain falling on already saturated ground prompting the Met Office to issue yellow warnings of heavy rain for North West England and Yorkshire.

Scotland is preparing for a low pressure system which will cause colder air to sweep in from the north. This will lead to sleet and snow on higher ground, with snow potentially also reaching lowland areas - and the Met Office has warned that the cold snap could also reach south into England.

Yellow warnings for snow have been issued for Scotland, Northern Ireland, North East England and the North West tomorrow.

Describing the situation as “complex”, a Met Office spokesperson said: “Parts of the UK will be subject to severe weather patterns with snow, wind, ice and rain affecting areas as far south as North West England on Friday.

“However, this precipitation should be lighter by the middle of the weekend.”

The Met Office has warned those looking to travel in affected areas to be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions and disruption to their journeys.
