Sixty years of avoiding arguments: Easington couple celebrate diamond wedding

A COUPLE are celebrating 60 years of wedded bliss.

 Husband Rod Calvert, 83, put the success of his long marriage down to avoiding arguments.

 Mr Calvert and wife Elsie, 80, are celebrating their diamond wedding with family and friends today at Easington Colliery Club.

 The couple, from Saturn Close in Easington, said they are “extremely happy” and “proud” of their marriage milestone.

 Rod and Elsie first met when a mutual friend brought the two together. Since then, they have been by each other’s side through thick and thin, with Elsie recalling that they had only been together for nine months when they engaged.

 The Calverts married on March 27, 1954, at the Easington Church of Asencion.

 The couple have three children, son Ian, and two daughters, Christine and Linda, as well as four grandchilden and two great-grandchildren.

 Rod worked as an electrician at Easington Colliery, while Elsie had various office jobs in lines such as laundry.
