And the 35-year-old is open to a move to a struggling Premier League side.

Could Berbatov fit the bill in the short term for the struggling Black Cats?

Berbatov, who has just finished a stint in Greece with PAOK, said "age doesn't matter" and he is keen to play for a side in England's top flight again.

"Hopefully I will find a team soon. In football, you can either play or not. It is not about age. Hopefully you will see me on the pitch soon," he told 5Live.

"I would like to come to England. When you’ve played in the Premier League you don’t want to play anywhere else. Hopefully - it would be great for me.

"Age doesn’t matter in football. For example, Totti is still playing at 40. Ryan Giggs was still playing when I was at Man U. I want to still play because it’s a love affair.

"In this stage of my career I know where I am - I would happily play for a team where they use my experience and my knowledge.

"I can help young players develop and make the team stronger. In the end it’s all about someone wanting me to come and play."
