The shocking flytipping that blights Sunderland's Children's Forest

The area known as the Children’s Forest, in Pennywell, has been hit by a number of problems in recent years.

Anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping have regularly been reported at the play area.

Residents have told of their dismay after more piles of rubbish were left across the area.

A sofa, DIY materials, plastic and wood were among the items left.

Sunderland City Council is now investigating the fly-tipping, and has promised to take “appropriate action” against those responsible.

One local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s disgusting to see such a lack of respect shown for the area.

“Not only does it look terrible, but it could also be dangerous if children are playing in this area.

“There has been a number of problems there over the years, and that’s showing no signs of letting up.

“The selfishness of people who do this never ceases to amaze me.”

The resident went on to say that there were a number of ‘tipping pitches’ at the Children’s Forest, with the area having seemingly became a regular target.

They added: “It’s getting worse.

“Some rubbish is being tipped onto the pathway, but this is just one tipping pitch. They are all over.

“Every time I go there seems to be more.

“It’s such a shame, because this could be a beautiful area is people helped to maintain it better.

“Unfortunately it is just being completely disrespected at the moment.”

A spokesman for Sunderland City Council said: “The city council is now aware of this incident and taking appropriate action.

“In the first instance, please report any fly-tipping to the council on 0191 520 5550 or at sunderland.gov.uk.”
