Shock results see Summer League get off to a flying start

The Danby Autos Sunderland Snooker Summer League kicked off with some interesting results, suggesting the season could be a very competitive quest for the titles.

In Group One, Whitburn started well with a 3-1 win at home to Murton Officials.

A 28-break helped John Smith with the first frame before Graeme Ablett won the second.

Tony Hazard claimed the third frame before Manna Singh/Jimmy Ashcroft got Murton a consolation point, beating John Smith and Joseph Cromby.

Ray James got The Victory off to a good start away at Steels before John butler fought back to beat Lee Norton.

An excellent 40-break saw Ray Charlton Junior win the third, before Ray Charlton Snr/Jimmy Gales potted well to secure a 2-2 draw.

Pennywell Comrades travelled to Lumley A and came away with a 2-2 draw.

In Group Two, South Hylton got off to an excellent start with a 4-0 win at home to Murton Colliery.

Winning for Hylton were Bobby Boyce, Graham Rutland, Ian Stewart and Boyce/Kevin Harrop.

Seaham Conservatives’ new signing Gary Stockton got them off to a good start away at Biddick, but a 26-break saw Terry Froud level the match.

David Adamson moved Biddick into the lead before teaming up with Rod Turnbull to win the pairs for the 3-1 win.

The match between Farringdon and Lumley B was expected to be close and after some high scoring singles frames, Farringdon took the pairs for the 2-2 draw.
