Shields Ferry remains off while weather affects Metro service as commuters face delays

Commuters should expect delays this morning after adverse weather struck the North East.

The region was hit by heavy rain and winds from yesterday afternoon, and Northumbria Police have warned of a number of road closures and delays.

In addition to that, the Shields Ferry remains off following damage to North Shields Ferry Landing.

Nexus, the public body which owns and operates the cross-Tyne passenger service, discovered structural damage yesterday afternoon and has suspended services to allow a full examination to take place.

A frequent Ferry replacement bus service is in operation for passengers throughout today, calling near both landings.

Buses depart from South Shields Ferry Landing on River Drive (B1344) - just outside the BT building.

Passengers who have a bike will not be able to use the replacement buses with their bikes.

Bikes can be used on the Tyne Tunnel shuttle bus, 6am-8pm, which runs between Jarrow and Howdon.

Meanwhile, the Tyne and Wear Metro service is suspended in North Tyneside between Benton and Shiremoor.

Metro posted on Twitter: "No trains Benton - Shiremoor due to flooding. Arriva are accepting Metro tickets on bus services 53 54 55.

"We have five taxis between Benton-Shiremoor in addition to ticket acceptance."
