SUNDERLAND thrillseekers have gone on the rampage in New Zealand

Dominic McDonough spent six weeks down under with brother Patrick, 34, as the pair battled it out for an extreme sports challenge.

They lived in a motorhome with five other couples from around the world, as they travelled from the north of the country to the south, competing in a series of adrenaline-fuelled stunts for TV show RV Rampage.

Challenges included bungee jumping, white-water rafting, glacier climbing and canyoning.

Dominic, from Ashbrooke, said: “We travelled 1,000 miles, living together, doing challenges together, some of which were pretty terrifying.”

“I am absolutely not into extreme sports. I only found out I was going to be in the TV show when I got a call from one of the producers, as my brother had entered us into the show.

“Next thing I knew, I was on a plane to New Zealand.

“The most exciting thing I usually do is have a cup of tea in front of the fire.

“My brother was really into the challenges, but I tended to do all the moaning. If you’ve ever seen Idiot Abroad, I make Karl Pilkington look happy.”

The six couples filmed the show in October, competing for the chance to win £5,000, by winning points from challenges.

Dominic, who is a Tory candidate for the Doxford ward in the upcoming local elections, said: “You would never know what you were doing each day.

“You’d wake up with a camera in your face and end up doing these challenges. It was terrifying, but fun.

“The most scary thing was white-water rafting, but I did enjoy canyon jumping off a waterfall and abseiling, that was fantastic. The funniest thing was shaving a sheep’s backside and a survival eating challenge.”

Dominic and Patrick will be representing the UK in RV Rampage, which begins on the Travel Channel next week.

Dominic said: “Hopefully I can prove in the show that a coward can change his ways, as I never thought I’d be brave enough to do this.”

•RV Rampage begins at 9pm on May 26, and is shown on the Travel Channel.
