BIGGEST Loser champ Kevin McLernon is proving a winner in love.
The reality TV star has popped the question to his long-term partner who has supported him through thick and thin.
Kevin, 39, who shed an amazing 40 per cent of his body weight to be crowned ITV’s Biggest Loser 2012, said shedding the pounds finally gave him the confidence to ask Joanne Chard, 35, to be his wife.
The devoted Seaburn couple plan to tie the knot in October in a quiet ceremony abroad, before a party for family and friends in The Sage, Gateshead.
Kevin, said: “I had planned to propose when we were on holiday in France earlier this year because I thought it would be romantic, but the moment never seemed right.
“Funnily enough, the right time came when we were just sitting together at home on the settee talking and I just asked her.
“She said yes and started crying, we are both really excited about it.”
Joanne knew exactly which engagement ring she wanted – the one her late grandmother left her.
The bride-to-be said: “Even though we had talked about marriage, it still came as a shock when he asked me. We are so happy.
“Before, Kevin’s weight was always a huge worry wondering what his health would be like, but now things have totally changed. He is a different person, so full of energy and we can look forward to the future.”
Kevin, who met Joanne 10 years ago when they literally bumped into each other in a crowded bar, said: “We always had a good relationship, but my weight was like a big black cloud hanging over us and I didn’t feel like I could ask her, but now that has all lifted away. I’m so lucky to have her.”
Millions tuned in earlier in the year to see Kevin take the title when his weight dropped from 32st 2lb to 19st 4lb and, to keep it in the family, Kevin’s niece and partner on the television show, Amy McLernon from South Shields, took the runner-up spot, with her weight dropping from 19st to 12st 11lb.
During the past few months Kevin has continued to train hard and is still losing weight.
He is due to qualify to be a personal trainer himself shortly and hopes to inspire other people to shed weight and turn their lives around
