Section of A690 remains closed as region's roads continue to be hit by snow
The A690 between the A19 and Houghton is still shut today due to the snow.
The stretch on Houghton Cut west-bound has been closed since noon on Friday, following a decision by Sunderland City Council and Northumbria Police, who said the road was likely to shut all weekend and is now likely to be shut tomorrow morning.
This afternoon, the police force said: "The A690 remains closed westbound from A19 up to Houghton Cut roundabout.
"This is currently looking to affect Monday morning traffic.
"Please use an alternate route or follow the diversions in place.
"Drive with care and we will continue to update you when we can #StaySafe."
Yesterday, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service worked to try and dislodge snow, but the road from the A19 roundabout remains closed off to vehicles.
A spokesman for Sunderland City Council today said: "The westbound carriageway of the A690 at Houghton Cut remains closed after fire service attempts to dislodge overhanging drifts proved unsuccessful.
"There will a further inspection this morning."
An alternative route to Houghton via New Herrington, Philadelphia and Newbottle is among those clear to use.
Burdon Lane also remained closed from the Burdon Road junction towards Ryhope earlier today, but is now open to traffic after it was cleared by the council.
This afternoon, Northumbria Police issued an update on the roads blocked off by the snow.
A spokesman said: "Most major routes are now open, but the following roads remain closed due to drifting snow and unsafe driving conditions.
"The roads that remain closed are to ensure public safety.
"They will be reviewed and consider options for reopening the road safely."
The force has also said: "Please take care and take precautions to #StaySafe.
"Only drive if essential, drive with care and beware of icy paths and roads."
Other roads in the region affected include:
*Fellside Road, Whickham is closed from East Byemoor Guest House to the Pack Horse. The risk of snow banks collapsing and drifting snow means this road is unsafe for driving and a risk to public safety. We will update tomorrow once an assessment has been made.
*Kibblesworth Bank from Ouslaw Lane including Birkland Lane but aiming to have it reopened later today.
*Haggs Lane in Lamesley from Birkhead Lane up to Pennyfine Road is expected to open imminently today.
*Horsegate Bank, from Lead Road, Chopwell is open and clear.
