Seaham tops rat league in County Durham

THOUSANDS of rat sightings have been reported in East Durham.

There were 5,812 rat sightings in the whole of County Durham last year.

Seaham had the most with 324, followed by Chester-le-Street (246) and Peterlee (218).

Durham County Council streetscene area manager Keith Parkinson said: “The figure of 5,812 reflects the number of people who have contacted us about the possibility of an issue with rats or mice.

“It does not reflect the actual number of rodent infestations.”

He added that Durham is the biggest North-East council in terms of population, which could explain the large number of calls.
