A BURGLAR was caught smashing his way into a family home in a bid to search for scrap.

George Smith, 32, had a crowbar in his hand and was forcing the front door at the Sunderland property when he was collared.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the homeowners were away on holiday when the raid happened last August but their son was at home, listening to music.

Prosecutor Rod Hunt said: “He heard a loud banging coming from the front door.

“He went to investigate and saw this defendant in the porch, holding a small crow-bar which was jammed in the door frame.”

Smith, of Dene Avenue, Houghton, admitted burglary.

Mr recorder Ben Nolan QC gave him a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.
