Schoolkids give racism the boot with help of SAFC legend

Sporty youngsters at a South Tyneside school have been kicking racism into touch.

Pupils at Hedworth Lane Primary School in Boldon Colliery were recently visited by the charity Show Racism the Red Card which is spearheaded by ex-Sunderland star Gary Bennett.

The organisation utilises the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society

The children took part in a range of activities with Mr Bennett and fellow anti-racism educational charity members.

Workshops were held to educate the students on what racism is, the effects it can have, and why it needs to be stopped.

Mr Bennett also took an outdoor session and put kids through their paces to promote keeping fit and working as part of a team

Headteacher Tony Gill, said: “Show Racism the Red Card offers school children a wonderful opportunity to explore the issues of Racism in a supportive environment.

“By using sport, and particular football as a vehicle for delivering its message all pupils relate to the issues really appropriately.

“The discussion sessions are excellent and are complimented by the football sessions.”

He added: “Working with professional and ex-professional footballers is always a pleasure and of course having Gary Bennett, ex-Sunderland captain visit school is superb.”
