The Great North Air Ambulance was called to the scene and the youngster was checked over by its crew, but his condition was not deemed serious enough to require transport by helicopter.
He was taken by road to the University Hospital of North Tees with an injury to his ankle and head.
One woman’s teenage daughter was on the bus at the time of the incident and said she had to give a statement to police on what she saw.
The mum, who did not want to be named, said: “The bus was coming up the road when a boy on a pedal bike came out from a side street and went straight into the bus.
“He fell off and the back went crashing into the side of the bus.
“The police then came and the air ambulance helicopter landed in a field close by.
“My daughter said if the bus had a been a second later the boy would have gone straight under it.”
