A MAN was airlifted to hospital after falling from scaffolding two storeys up a building.
The 58-year-old was on a construction site in Oak Tree Drive, near St Matthew’s Church, in Silksworth, when he fell.
Paramedics arrived within five minutes of the call, with the first crew on scene calling for back-up before it was decided to call in the air ambulance.
The medics put the man, who was conscious and suffering from suspected chest injuries, on to a spinal board, with the air crew at the scene for more than half an hour.
The man was then flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he was admitted to its trauma centre with serious injuries.
Police also attended the incident and have informed the Health and Safety Executive.
They are expected to conduct their own investigation into the circumstances of the fall.
