FUNNY-GIRL Sarah Millican will be unleashing her new material on a Sunderland audience.
The award-winning comedian has sold out theatres around the country since bursting on to the comedy scene, but chose Wearside to trial jokes for her next tour.
She will take to the stage at the 150-seater venue Infinity in High Street West on June 24.
Tickets for the gig sold out in just three minutes after they went on sale via the South-Shields comedian’s website.
Infinity owner, Jay Mullen, said: “It’s a big coup for us as she’s selling out theatres at the minute.
“We have a comedy club here run by Grinning Idiot which Sarah used to be a member of before she became famous and she still has close ties to the club.”
He added: “All big comics have warm-up gigs to try out material for tours and John Smith from Grinning Idiot recommended that Sarah come here for hers. I believe it’s to try out material for her 2013 tour.
“It will be a chance to see Sarah perform an intimate gig as we seat around 150 people. They will get to see nearly an hour’s worth of new material, plus we’ll have three other comedians on the bill who are up and coming.
“We’re still getting emails now from customers wanting to go to her gig but it sold out in minutes.”
Since taking over the once-ailing venue, formerly know as Theatre Restaurant, a year ago Jay has striven to attract more people to this corner of the city centre.
As well as being a bar, it acts as an arts venue for plays, music and comedy.
Future acts include Tom Stade who will perform on July 25.
“The venue’s been run unsuccessfully in the past as they’ve sold it, but we wanted to do something different,” he said. “We are trying to create a Customs House-style venue so that instead of just hosting in-house shows, touring theatre companies can use the venue.”
l Tickets for Tom Stade are £8. They go on sale on July 1 from Tel. 567 0050.
