A SEA of Santas will take over Mowbray Park for a festive fun run.

Hundreds of red suit-clad runners will descend on the city centre park as part of a series of Santa Runs.

Wannabe Father Christmases, young and old, are invited to take part in the challenges, which are for all ages, on December 7.

The runs are being staged by Sunderland Live as part of its Christmas in Sunderland programme.

The fun will get started at 10.30am with the Family Santa Run, which encourages family members to team up and get involved. Children taking part will be decked out in a suitably festive fashion and the grown-ups will be provided with a Santa suit and beard to wear – and keep – as they all run, jog or walk a 1.5-mile course, which will include challenges and treats along the way.

Chris Alexander, chief operating officer from Sunderland Live, said: “The Santa Runs are new to our Christmas calendar this year and promise to provide a fantastic fun day for everyone who takes part.

“Mowbray Park is the perfect setting for an event of this kind and we are looking forward to watching the park being taken over by hundreds of Santas and their helpers.”

The second run of the day will be a Chocolate Santa Run, which begins at 12.30pm.

This challenge, which is open to everyone aged 16 and over, will feature chocolate surprises along the route.

Tickets for the Santa Runs are available now, priced £10 for those 16 and over and £5 for children, with child places available for the Family Run only.
