A RUSSIAN spring festival has stumped Sunderland fans’ plans to paint Trafalgar Square red and white the night before the Capital One Cup Final.

Thousands of SAFC supporters had planned to gather in the London square the night before Sunday’s cup final clash against Manchester City at Wembley.

But the plaza is set to be sealed off on Saturday night for the Maslenitsa Russian Festival.

The festival takes place on Sunday, but the square is understood to be out of bounds the night before to allow organisers to set up shop.

Sunderland fans are now putting together new plans for pre-match celebrations on Saturday night.

Maslenitsa – also known as Butter Week, Crepe week, or Cheesefare Week – combines a Russian Orthodox religious celebration with an older pagan festival welcoming the arrival of spring.
