Fire crews were called out after a rubbish blaze spread to a cottage.
It happened just after 10pm yesterday in Regal Road, Millfield.
A pile of furniture and refuse caught fire in the back lane of the property before spreading to the outside of a single-storey property.
Crews from Sunderland Central and Marley Park stations rushed to the scene to put out the blaze.
About three metres of fascia and three metres of flat roofing on the cottage were severely damaged by fire, but no other damage was caused and no-one was injured.
Firefighters put out the fire using one hose reel while a thermal imaging camera was also used to check for hot spots.
