And Black Cats supporters had even more to celebrate with their win, ensuring bitter rivals Newcastle United were relegated.

"Big Sam has saved Sunderland and hopefully will take them to the Champions League next season," David Richardson wrote on the Echo Facebook page. "Well we can dream."

Sara Louise wrote: "Brilliant! The black cats killed off the two birds!"

Craig White said: "Big Sam is the most under-rated manager in England. His teams may not be easy on the eye, but he knows the Premier League inside out. Glad you stayed up, Bolton Wanderers fan."

But he added: "I would love SAFC to be successful but this last ditch stuff every season is a bit tiresome."
