He rocked the audience and caused quite a stir among the coaches - but sadly there was no Voice victory for Sunderland singer Billy Black.

The 38-year-old had the crowd on their feet as he belted out Robert Palmer’s Bad Case of Loving You on the hit BBC1 show.

But sadly, his passionate performance wasn't enough to get one of the show's four judges to turn around in their chairs, even though Will.i.am certainly seemed to touch a nerve with Ricky Wilson by saying the Kaiser Chiefs frontman should have picked the Wearsider.

Billy was busy gigging tonight while the audition was aired, but his family, including wife Donna and children Danny, 11, and Jessica, seven, all tuned in to see him take to the stage in a bid to impress the four coaches.

Billy, from Pallion, said: "It was a great experience and probably the biggest thing I've done. No matter what the outcome, I always saw it as a great platform.

"Performing with the musicians on The Voice was great, their band is excellent. All the crew were lovely, they're all really professional.

"I've been really pleased with all the support from people in Sunderland, I didn't expect it."

It wasn't just Billy who missed out on Saturday night's show. Former Sunderland and England star Chris Waddle's daughter Brooke was also unable to persuade one of the coaches to turn around.
