Chris Coleman was sensationally removed from his post on Sunday, just minutes before a deal between Ellis Short and an international consortium fronted by Stewart Donald was announced.

Chris Wilder, Mick McCarthy and Michael Appleton are among the favourites to replace the Welshman but no appointment is likely until the takeover is ratified by the EFL.

It is Stockdale's third stint as caretaker boss, having taken charge when Dick Advocaat left in October 2015.

He did not oversee any games during that period but he did lead the team in two games earlier this season following Simon Grayson's departure.

Under his management the Black Cats were beaten 1-0 by Middlesbrough in the FA Cup before a 2-2 draw with Millwall in the league.

Sunday's opponents Wolverhampton Wanderers have already been confirmed as league champions.
