Robbers steal cash after raid on Sunderland store

Police are hunting a gang of robbers who stole cash from a Sunderland store.

Police at the Spar shop in Ewesley Road.

Three men went into the Spar Shop in Ewesley Road, Sunderland, at 9.50pm on Saturday night and threatened staff and demanded they opened the safe before leaving with a quantity of cash.

Local residents told the Echo that the raiders were armed but Northumbria Police said they were unable to confirm that.

Police said nobody was injured during the robbery.

The robbers left the scene in the direction of Cleveland Road. All three men were said to have local accents.

A police spokeswoman said: "Extra patrols are being carried out in the area to carry out enquiries."
