The highways work around the Sunderland College City Campus will get underway on Tuesday.

The works are re-modelling Holmeside between where it crosses Maritime Street and Park Lane to the west and where it meets Waterloo Place to the east.

Holmeside traffic becomes westbound only for the duration of the works with diversions in place in Grange Terrace, Park Road and into Burdon Road.

Works include new loading and on-street parking bays, a widened and improved footpath, new bus stops, plus highways re-surfacing. A new access and exit point for college service vehicles is also being created.

Councillor Michael Mordey, Portfolio Holder for City Services, said: "The city council has been working very closely with Sunderland College on its new campus.

"These works are not only integral to the college development, but will also help residents and businesses in this busy and popular part of our city.

"Pedestrian access is being maintained at all times and, while there could be some minor disruption during works, the new campus is a major educational and economic investment in our city centre."

Works are being programmed in small stages to minimise disruption during June, July and into the August holiday period.

The works follow the re-modelling of Park Lane outside what will be the entrance to the city campus opposite the transport interchange, which have seen new lighting columns, kerbs, and a new taxi rank are put in.

Sunderland College's 135,000sq ft City Campus is due to open in September.
