A BUSY road was closed as emergency services spent two hours investigating liquid leaking from a tanker – only to find it was water.
Police shut part of the A1231 near The Galleries in Washington yesterday after a leak from the vehicle parked near the shopping centre spread on to the road at about 10am.
The road was closed as a precaution, causing miles of tailbacks, and a footpath near The Galleries was also shut while tests were carried out to find out what the liquid was.
Up to seven fire engines were called to the incident and crews wearing protective clothing carried out a thorough search of the tanker, but no hazardous liquids were found.
After almost two hours the road was reopened and police revealed the leak was water.
