DRIVERS faced delays in Sunderland and more than 240 homes had their power cut due to damaged overhead power lines.
Herrington Road was closed this afternoon after a truck hit power lines on the B1286 Herrington, near the A19 overpass.
Power was cut off to 242 homes shortly before 2pm. Engineers have been working to restore power but more than 50 homes were still without electricity at 7pm.
The company said at 9pm, 28 customers were still left without power, with all expected to have their supply reinstated by midnight.
A spokesman for Northern Powergrid said it apologised to customers, but the circumstances of the incident were beyond its control.
It said its engineers were on scene and working hard to ensure homes and businesses had their electricity restored as quickly as possible.
Northumbria Police said the road remains and is likely to stay closed off to traffic for several hours to come.
