A BODY found in the river at Durham is believed to be that of a missing pensioner.

Police and firefighters were called to the river near to Framwellgate Bridge in Durham City at about 3pm on Wednesday.

The bridge was closed while the body was recovered.

Robert Porter, 78, from Spennymoor, was reported missing in the early hours of the same day by staff at the supported accommdation where he lived.

A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday and police hoped they would be able to formally identify the body as Mr Porter’s. Officers are not treating the death as suspicious at this stage.
