FOOTBALL rivals wore their opposing team’s colours in honour of a newlywed father at his funeral.

Christian Howey’s service saw Newcastle fans wear red and white as they paid tribute to the 38-year-old Black Cats supporter.

The season ticket holder at the Stadium of Light was laid to rest in a red and white coffin.

His funeral also included music played before matches at the stadium.

Mr Howey died last month after an operation to remove a non-cancerous tumour from his pancreas and it is thought he developed internal bleeding and septicaemia.

He and partner Joanne moved their wedding day forward before he underwent surgery in June.

The railway operator, from Gainford, Teesdale, also leaves a two-year-old son Toby Christian and stepchildren Elanor, William and Scarlett Kipling.
