Sunderland marathon hero Aly Dixon has been confirmed as the official race start for Wearside's weekend of running.

The Sunderland Stroller is fresh from qualifying for the Rio Olympic games with a breathtaking performance at the 2016 Virgin London Marathon.

The 37-year-old had already run the Olympic marathon qualifying time in Berlin last year, and clinched her place on Team GB by finishing as the first female British athlete in London on Sunday.

Now she will inspire the thousands of runners and spectators taking part in the Siglion Sunderland City 10K and Half Marathon on Sunday.

She said: "I’m really excited for another great day of races in Sunderland. I can’t join in the running this time so I’m looking forward to sending the runners on their way and presenting their medals in the finish.

"Good luck everyone, I hope you achieve your goals”
