The ribbon was cut on Gildacre Fields, which features housing for people aged 55 and over in Bardolph Drive, Southwick, with Mayor of Sunderland Councillor Alan Emmerson doing the honours.

The site offers 100 modern one and two-bedroom apartments and 30 bungalows for rent or shared ownership, with support services on site, and communal facilities including a restaurant, salon, residents’ lounge and laundry room.

Kris Peach, director of Extra Care for Housing & Care 21, said: “Extra Care apartments allow older people to live independently in their own home, with access to all the support they need on the same site.

“A care team is based on-site 24 hours a day, which gives residents and their families the peace of mind of knowing that support is there should they need it.

“The official opening of Gildacre Fields is another great milestone in the great work we have been doing in partnership with Sunderland City Council and Keepmoat.”

Sunderland City Council portfolio holder for housing and adult services Councillor Graeme Miller, said: “This latest extra-care development at Gildacre Fields provides another example of what is being achieved with our development partners at Housing & Care 21 and Keepmoat, and adds to the specialist housing choices available to people here in Sunderland.”

A number of other new extra care developments have been opened in Sunderland in the last couple of years including Keelboat Lodge, Dovecote Meadow and Springtide Cove.
