PETITION king George Smith has collected another 1,500 signatures towards the Echo’s campaign to save Sunderland fire station.

In total, the 66-year-old, from Pallion, has gathered 5,500 of the 14,500 names of Wearsiders demanding the Railway Row station remains open.

The station is under threat as Tyne and Wear Fire Authority fight to make multimillion pound savings after Government cuts.

Mr Smith said: “It’s not just about the fire station, people are worried about the police station closing too.

“Everyone I have asked has been very supportive of the petition. The feedback I’m getting is unanimous.”

“People don’t understand why the fire station is being closed, and why we would have to rely on stations outside of the city centre.” George is now targeting businesses and factories in the city that may be at the greatest risk of fire, to gain more signatures and support.
