Two teams worked together to help paramedics after a person fell near to the cliffs at Marsden this afternoon.
Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade were alerted at 1.20pm today after the North East Ambulance Service asked for help.
A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "On our arrival the individual had aggravated a pre-existing condition and was transported back to the main road where they were handed over to the awaiting ambulance.
"The Ambulance Hazardous Area Response Team also attended with their off road vehicle but on this occasion it wasn't required."
The service added people should call 999 in the case of all coastal emergencies and ask for the Coastguard.
