A SICK swan, pictured, who had eluded rescuers for nearly a week has been caught and is receiving veterinary treatment.

As reported in the Echo, members of the North East Swan Rescue, Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service and the RSPCA had been trying to reach the swan since it was first spotted last weekend.

Swan rescuer Linda Charlton, who kept a vigil on the promenade at Chester-le-Street’s Riverside Park, said: “The swan was successfully rescued on Saturday morning.

“He moved towards us and we were just lucky and grabbed him. He still wasn’t eating but he was quite feisty, he put up quite a bit of resistance.

“The RSPCA took him straight to Berwick Swan and Wildlife Trust and he is there now.”
