Members of Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade were called to the animal’s aid shortly after 8.30am on Friday.

The dog, a spaniel, had fallen over the cliff at Whitburn Coastal Park and was stuck in a sinkhole at the Wherry, near Souter.

Working together, the emergency teams set up rope rescue equipment so a technician could be lowered to collect the dog and bring it to safety.

A statement from the Coastguard added: “Both teams worked together to lower a rope rescue technician to recover the dog back to the owners.

"The dog, a spaniel, was recovered safe and well and appeared no worse for its ordeal.”

Both organisations, which issued statements about the incident on social media, reminded the public to contact the Coastguard via 999 in a coastal emergency.
