YOUNGSTERS are having wheelie good fun thanks to a big-hearted dad who set up his own recycling project.
The Recycle Bike Scheme has only been running for five months and has proved so successful it’s already donated 50 bikes to youngsters in the Catchgate and Annfield Plain area, near Durham City.
The scheme, which runs from Catchgate Children’s Centre as part of their Dad’s Group, is funded by the Catchgate Town Councillors Fund.
Nick Stringer, who reconditions the bikes for further use, said: “On Sunday, another dad and I took 15 children on their bikes along the cycle path.
“I took plenty of drinks and snacks and off we all went along the dirt track.
“We left at 1pm and we didn’t get back until 7pm.
“We had a brilliant time and this was all because of the Recycle Bike scheme.
“It was brilliant.”
Nick is calling for families to donate bikes which are no longer used.
Julie Patterson, family support manager, echoed his call: “What we really need is more people donating their unwanted bikes to this scheme.
“If you, your friends or family have any bikes that you don’t use any more we will find a very happy home for them.”
