Reaching out to help the homeless

A lifeline for the homeless will receive a cash injection after Sunderland Empire announced it as its charity of the year.

After a successful 2015 collecting for NSPCC Sunderland, the theatre is urging audiences to continue this generosity for Centrepoint, Sunderland.

Bucket collections will be held at shows throughout the year.

Centrepoint, which supported 420 homeless young people in the city in the past 12 months, provides not only a safe place to stay, but also vital help in tackling physical and mental health problems caused by homelessness and support in finding a job or a route back into education.

Amy Gormanley, senior fundraising officer at Centrepoint, said: “We’re delighted to be Sunderland Empires charity of the year.

“Our work with vulnerable young people in Sunderland has shown us the central role the local community plays in tackling youth homelessness.

“The money helps Centrepoint provide more than just a bed, it also helps in addressing health problems.”
