FIRE crews were called after a delivery van caught fire.
Firefighters were called to Castle Eden Road, in Durham, just after 9.20am on Tuesday, when a blaze began in the tyre of the vehicle before going on to spread to the rear compartment where the parcels are stored.
Fortunately, the driver of the Parcel Force van was able to remove all of the packages with the help of some passers-by before anything was damaged.
No one was injured in the fire.
Today, firefighters praised the fast-acting driver who managed to clear out the vehicle before any further damage took place.
Watch manager at Peterlee fire station Peter Brown said: “Luckily nothing was damaged as the driver, with some help, managed to remove all of the parcels in time.
“Thanks to us being contacted so quickly, we were able to put out the fire before it got out of control.”
