LIFEBOAT volunteers were scrambled after a puppy fell off a pier.

Sunderland RNLI Lifeboat Station was called into action shortly before 4.15pm yesterday, after reports the pet had fallen from Seaham North Pier.

Senior helmsman Paul Nicholson said: “While the inshore lifeboat was travelling to the scene, coastguards arrived to discover that the puppy had managed to make its own way back to the shore unaided.”

He said the owners had done the right thing by dialling 999 instead of swimming out to rescue their dog.
