Pundit: 'I feel sorry for David Moyes '“ he needs more quality players but has to work with what he's got'

Sunderland remain bottom of the Premier League after a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday night.

The build-up to the game was dominated by chief executive Martin Bain’s revelation that Sunderland won’t be active in the transfer market next month, despite the squad needing strengthening.

And Match of the Day pundit Neville, who worked alongside Moyes at Everton, said it is a huge blow to the manager.

He said: “I read in the papers that there is no money to spend in January – it was the money in (last) January that kept them in the Premier League.

“So I actually feel sorry for David Moyes at the moment because the players he’s got at the moment, they’re the ones he’s got to work with until the end of the season.

“He’ll be trying to suck every little bit of energy, quality effort out of them.

“I think he’s doing that really well. (Against Chelsea) they actually competed really well and with them two (late) chances, if either of them had gone in it would be a good result.

“But I do think they need to add some quality to the team.”
