Leicester City celebrate Jamie Vardy's second goal at the Stadium of Light. Will Sunderland meet the champions again on August 13?

Sunderland, if the fixtures ‘release’ is to be believed will start the 2016-17 season at champions Leicester City.

The Premier League – and Football League – reacted quickly by sending out a Tweet to say it was a hoax, adding that fans will have to wait until June 15 to learn the real deal.

“We understand the excitement that a new set of Premier League fixtures holds to the fans and media,” said a Premier League spokesperson.

“What has been put into the public domain over this last weekend is a hoax.

“We would encourage all fans and media to wait for the official release on 15 June.”

If the hoax fixtures are to be believed, Sunderland would visit the champions on August 13, a match almost certainly switched for TV coverage.

Sam Allardyce’s first home match would be against Watford on Saturday, August 20.

There are no Tyne-Wear derbies this season but Middlesbrough’s promotion means there will be a Wear-Tees affair. Again, if the fixture list is to be believed, The Black Cats would visit Boro on December 3.

Other notable fixtures involve Liverpool away on Boxing Day and Manchester United at home on New Year’s Eve.
