A POWER surge left about 775 homes without electricity.

Hundreds of homes and businesses in the Pallion and Ford Estate areas of the city were plunged into darkness yesterday after the cut.

A spokesman for Northern Power said engineers were alerted at 10.30am and started working on the problem immediately.

Stores including Greggs the Bakers and Subway, in St Luke’s Terrace, were left without power.

They remained open to customers, offering a partial service.

Residents also found themselves unable to use their electricity.

It is unknown at this stage what caused the power surge but an investigation is under way.
