A POWER cut left 1,800 homes without electricity.

Supplies to houses in Sunderland and South Tyneside were affected due to problems caused by high winds.

The power went off at 4am on Sunday and electricity supplier Northern Powergrid worked through the day to get all power back up and running again by 6pm.

The main areas affected were in Hylton Castle, Red House and Southwick, in Sunderland. Homes in Boldon and Whitburn also had supplies disrupted.

Two stretches of overhead power lines were affected by the weather.

Mick Hickling, head of network repairs at Northern Powergrid, said: “The high winds have caused falling trees and airborne debris to damage overhead power lines.

“A helicopter was deployed to inspect overhead lines in some of the worst affected areas so that we locate the faults quickly and carry out essential repairs.

“We have well-rehearsed plans in place and all available engineers and linesmen worked to respond to the cuts as quickly as possible.

“I would like to thank all affected customers for their patience while we worked to restore power supplies.”
