Plans for a towering 60-bed hotel near Nissan have been lodged with Sunderland City Council.

All Saints Construction has submitted a full planning application for land off Washington Road.

The developer has bought the site which houses the former ‘Three Horse Shoes’ pub – now known as the Rustica Trattoria & Inn.

If approved, the hotel is expected to be built on land near the venue alongside a new 92-space carpark.

The plans were originally submitted in October last year and validated by council planners on April 10.

And they fall against a backdrop of the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP) development – which aims to create thousands of jobs for the region.

Under the IAMP ‘area action plan’, a report states, the pub site sits in an area identified as ‘the hub’ – with proposed uses for leisure, education and training facilities.

It adds: “The current bar / restaurant has open fields to the North and West. These will be replaced with the new buildings of the IAMP.

“The hub will be the heart of the new development where people will come to relax and take advantage of the food retail and leisure facilities built to serve the IAMP.”

Developers state the design will be “contemporary, legible and one that would easily be recognised and associated with the new Hotel 52 brand.”

A mix of double and family rooms will also be offered at the site, including single rooms aimed at people working away from home.

And applicants add the hotel will help provide “much-needed accommodation during the construction of the IAMP.”

Public comments can be made on the application until Thursday, May 2 with a final decision expected by early July.
